Turning Pain into Purpose: My Journey from Accident to Advocacy.

One's life can change in an instant. For me, that moment came with an accident I witnessed the fragility of life and death, which taught me the priority of first aid firsthand.  An accident so severe that it left me not only with physical injury but also profoundly aware of the importance of first aid awareness. During my recovery, I was filled with the guilt that I was at an accident scene and I could not assist with first aid.

I wasn't entirely at fault, I was also a casualty who was unconscious but responsive till we were moved to a different vehicle to convey us to the University Teaching Hospital (UITH), Ilorin. The accident was so fatal that we lost 3 people to the accident. I sustained multiple fractures.
Watching short clips from the accident, I realized how crucial it was for everyone to be equipped with the knowledge & skills to respond to emergencies. We had people at the scene but none could administer first aid.   NEWS ON THE ACCIDENT

Instead of letting my pain define me, I boldly transformed it into a mission: Advocating for first aid education.

Here’s how I turned a personal setback into a powerful cause:

💡 Awareness: I began by advancing my knowledge of first aid, asking questions from Dare Joseph Akinfosile Samuel Patricia Adebayo Aliu Stephen Michael Ogunyinde Emmanuel Oshoniyi Adetayo MOSHOOD SAKA Ebenezer Toba Kolawole MPH, Olaniyi Esther Ibrahim Amuda, educating myself on first aid techniques, I read & watched a lot of accident/emergency related videos, movies (Chicago Med) and attending training. The more I learned, the more I felt compelled to share this knowledge.

👥Training: I became a certified First Aid Trainer through the Nigerian Red Cross Society dedicated to teaching others how to respond effectively in emergencies. My courses were designed to be engaging, practical, and accessible to people of all backgrounds. The resource person sent by the NHQ to the Kwara State Branch, Instructor Abubakar Abdullahi (BTO Kogi State) made learning more educative, fun, and intriguing.

📝Blogging: I launched First Aid Advocates', a blog aimed at spreading awareness & providing valuable first aid tips, updates on guidelines & inspiring stories of real-life heroes. I write in the simplest form that even a child can understand. I had to take a Technical writing course to learn to write in simple form.

🙌Advocacy: Through speaking engagements and social media, I continued to advocate for the importance of first aid training. I aim to ensure everyone knows how to act in an emergency. Hence the slogan “EVERYWHERE FOR EVERYONE”

My journey from injury to advocacy has been enriching. It’s a testament to the resilience of the human spirit and the power of turning pain into purpose. I encourage everyone to learn first aid—not just for themselves, but for others.

Together, we can create a safer and more prepared world. hashtagFirstAid hashtagAdvocacy hashtagLifeSavingSkills hashtagCommunitySafety hashtagResilience

HOW TO MANAGE/ TREAT BLEEDING.

HOW TO MANAGE BLEEDING.  The first thing is to check for your safety. Protect yourself, are you safe? Will I be at risk if I help this person? Will I be harmed if I leave my car to help this person on the roadside? May a person not become a victim of kidnap because he wants to help another person. 😩😩  If you are safe, then you can proceed to help the casualty. Do manage bleeding quickly and without panic. Please, note that you must protect yourself from transmittable diseases and infections. Like HIV/AIDS, Hepatitis B, e.t.c Make use of gloves (Neat nylon if there are no gloves) Face mask but if there is none, you are still good to go. Source: Pixabay Prolonged and severe bleeding can lead to shock and unconsciousness. Bleeding can be dramatic and distressing. I was once there and I know what it feels like. I have seen people shout, slap, or punch those who are helping them because they are in pain and distress. Source: pixabay Yes, just be patient with them. Keep givi...
