HOW TO MANAGE/ TREAT BLEEDING.

 HOW TO MANAGE BLEEDING.

The first thing is to check for your safety.

Protect yourself, are you safe?

Will I be at risk if I help this person?

Will I be harmed if I leave my car to help this person on the roadside?

May a person not become a victim of kidnap because he wants to help another person. 😩😩

If you are safe, then you can proceed to help the casualty.

Do manage bleeding quickly and without panic.

Please, note that you must protect yourself from transmittable diseases and infections. Like HIV/AIDS, Hepatitis B, e.t.c

Make use of gloves (Neat nylon if there are no gloves)

Face mask but if there is none, you are still good to go.

Prolonged and severe bleeding can lead to shock and unconsciousness. Bleeding can be dramatic and distressing.

I was once there and I know what it feels like.

I have seen people shout, slap, or punch those who are helping them because they are in pain and distress.

Yes, just be patient with them.

Keep giving them assurance that they will be fine, as Davido was giving Chioma.

Keep assuring them, some might ask, will I walk again, respond with yes or you will be fine.

When treating bleeding, check first if objects are embedded in the wound. e.g Knifes, Bottles, Nails e.t.c

If there are objects, try as much as possible to avoid pressing, removing, or touching the object.

Do not let the casualty eat or drink, you need to make them very calm, or else 10 will happen ( Mewa ma sele).

I was in a fatal accident some years ago, and we lost some people (may their souls rest in peace).

Upon getting to the hospital, I kept asking for water, but no one gave me water.

I kept begging for a drop of water but I wasn't given.

Why is that?

This is because the doctors might need to carry out an emergency surgery in which anesthesia will be administered and eating or drinking before the surgery can complicate things.

As soon as you have assessed the situation,  please call for help. You can't do it alone, aside from that may we not be implicated. A sori re, ori ire yoo sewa (Yoruba Language).

Casualties lose their lives, what will you say. No evidence, You go explain tire.

Do not! Never! Administer first aid alone, na wahala oh.

Casualties/Casualty are those you want to treat or administer first aid to.

WHAT  DO YOU NEED.

  1. Bandage
  2. Gauze
  3. Plaster
  4. Scissors/ New blade
  5. Clean clothe
  6. Gloves
  7. Patience
  8. Tactfulness
  9. Resourcefulness

WHAT TO DO?

🀸🏾‍♀ Remove or cut clothing around the affected part to expose the wound so you can see what you are about to deal with, cut if necessary.

🀸🏾‍♀ Apply direct pressure over the wound: You do this by using a clean gauze bandage, sanitary pad, or cloth. If you are not protected(gloves) ask the person to apply the pressure himself/herself.

If there is an object in the wound, apply pressure on either side of the object.

CAN I USE COTTON WOOL / COTTON BALLS?

No, using cotton balls or wools to clean open wounds is not recommended, as loose fibers may stick to the wound, slowing the healing process.

πŸ‹πŸ½‍♀πŸ‹πŸ½‍♀ Maintain direct pressure: See if there is circulation beyond the bandage. Press one of the nails or the skin beyond the bandage for five seconds until it turns pale, then release the pressure. If the color does not return within two seconds, this shows the bandage is too tight. If necessary, loosen and re-apply the bandage. Add pressure on the wound, raise and support the injured limb above the heart level just as in the picture below.

🀸🏾‍♀Secure the dressing with a bandage so it is firm enough to maintain pressure but not so tight.

πŸ₯ŠπŸ₯Š If bleeding shows through the dressing, apply a second pad on top of the first one. If bleeding shows on the second dressing, remove both and add a new one.

🀸🏾‍♀ Support the injured part in a raised position with a sling or bandage. Check if there is blood circulation every 10 minutes (check if the place is pink or light red).

If not pink or light red loosen the bandage and re-apply.

See how to make an arm sling with a triangular bandage from the image below;

Help the casualty lie down on a rug or blanket if there is one to protect them from cold due to shock. Movement can also increase the flow of blood. Raise and support his/her legs so that the legs are above the heart level. For female casualties, try covering their legs when lifting or raising to protect their privacy.

Always remember to keep assuring your casualty, that not all first aid should be performed on in a spot, e.g. treatment of bleeding, unconsciousness, etc can be done while in transit.

Another important thing is not entrusting the casualty's property to anyone but yourself and your team.

BLEEDING 2

It's a new month and a season of love.  Welcome to February!πŸ’•πŸ’•πŸ’•πŸ’•πŸ’• What is the point of having a lover who can not administer first aid, my words still remain "NO CPR, NO MARRIAGE".  Yes, you read that correctly. Imagine gisting with your partner and one of you loses consciousness, will the person survive? will you be able to help or get help? YOU DON'T WANT YOUR HEART BLEEDING LIKE IN THE IMAGE ABOVE.  PLEASE, LEARN FIRST AID! IT MAKES YOU FEEL LIKE YOU HAVE WON A GRAMMY AWARD. From our last post, the answer to the assessment is Venous Bleeding. CLASSIFICATION OF BLEEDING. Bleeding can be classified into two; 1. Internal Bleeding: This bleeding is often caused by trauma resulting from internal organ damage, medical illnesses, and bleeding into body cavities or tissue spaces. This type of bleeding cannot be easily controlled as it can not be easily noticed in some cases. the best first aid treatment you can administer is immediately taking the person to the hos...

Turning Pain into Purpose: My Journey from Accident to Advocacy.

One's life can change in an instant. For me, that moment came with an accident I witnessed the fragility of life and death, which taught me the priority of first aid firsthand.  An accident so severe that it left me not only with physical injury but also profoundly aware of the importance of first aid awareness. During my recovery, I was filled with the guilt that I was at an accident scene and I could not assist with first aid.                                                   I wasn't entirely at fault, I was also a casualty who was unconscious but responsive till we were moved to a different vehicle to convey us to the University Teaching Hospital (UITH), Ilorin. The accident was so fatal that we lost 3 people to the accident. I sustained multiple fractures. Watching short clips from the accident, I realized how crucial it was for everyone to be equipped ...
